Influence of Bio-Coal Properties on Carbonization and Bio-Coke Reactivity

Coke corresponds to 2/3–3/4 of the reducing agents in BF, and by partial replacement coking coals with 5–10% bio-coal, fossil CO2 emissions from BF can be lowered ~4–8%. Coking coal blends 5% 10% additions bio-coals (pre-treated biomass) different origins pre-treatment degrees were carbonized at laboratory scale a bio-coal addition technical scale, aiming understand impact on properties (ash amount composition, volatile matter content) bio-coke reactivity. A thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) connected quadrupole mass spectroscope monitored residual off-gases during carbonization. To explore effect plasticity, optical dilatometer tests conducted for addition. The plasticity was increasing addition, but pyrolyzed biomass had less negative compared torrefied biomasses high content oxygen. temperature starting gasification coke general greater extent bio-cokes produced containing higher contents catalyzing oxides. There no significant difference coke, terms reactivity as measured TGA. Bio-coke pelletized showed similar strength reference after reaction.
